“The Neuroscience Explosion: Applying the Practical Aspects ofCurrent Research in Neurodevelopment and Neuropathology”
This course provides an overview of the recent explosion in understanding of the neuropathologies of processing, language, and cognition achieved with the advances in genetics, neuroimagery and functional imagery of the brain during sensorimotor and cognitive tasks. Dr. Burns will stress a multidisciplinary approach to neurological deficits including sensorimotor, visual, and cognitive deficits, as well as language disorders, making this course highly applicable to physical, occupational and speech therapists. The emphasis will be on the practical aspects of this information for our work in rehabilitation of patients with neurodevelopmental deficits and other neuropathologies. Discussion will focus on network theory and the neurological mechanisms involved in auditory, visual and somesthetic perception, association, processing and memory. We will take a clinical perspective by giving an overview of a particular neuropathway, possible deficits to that pathway, and summarize with discussion and videoclips of symptoms, disorders and treatment approaches. Participants will gain insight into exciting evidence of human neuroplasticity throughout the lifespan and share in the optimism for the future of neurorehabilitation.

1% Program for Attorneys
Under the 1% Program, the BIAM facilitates contacts between persons who need legal counsel and participating law firms, while attorneys have the opportunity to participate in the BIAM's mission of education, prevention, and advocacy. The idea behind this program is simple. Participating attorneys donate 1% of all fees obtained in the settlement of traumatic brain injury cases to the BIAM. This Program was created as an incentive for attorneys to join us in our mission of providing people with brain injuries with the resources they need. We do, however assist everyone who contacts BIAM regardless of participation in the 1% Program.
In exchange for your firm's participation, we will provide information about your legal services to individuals with brain injuries and their families. Your firm will also recieve the BIAM's quarterly newsletter, which will help you stay up-to-date on assistive resources across the state for your clients who live with an injury. Although we can not make referrals to individual attorneys because of liability reasons we do make referrals to a list of attorneys in a specific area. If you have experience in specific legal areas concerning issues that face people with brain injuries, (i.e. Social Security, Medical Malpractice, Workers Compensation, Personal Injury, Structured Settlements, etc.) please contact us for more information.
The BIAM can also help you to find professionals that are often involved with individuals with a brain injury such as life planners and independent case management services. Along with this service, we can help make referrals for your client to rehabilitation services, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, etc. We also offer a free service to individuals with brain injuries aptly named Resource Facilitation Service (RFS). For more information on this service please visit the web page by clicking here.
